"Looking For" came out of a new crop of songs in late '99. The lyrics were more or less about my ex-girlfriend. I used to attend a writers group and they told me they sounded quite arrogant, but that was never the intention.
After demoing it, I realised it had a lot of potential. Gradually I built it up with just the acoustic guitar, introducing the bass beat and lead guitars. But to really take it further it needed more. That's when I added all the extras, a cutting electric guitar in the break, a timpani sample, and keyboards. I even got an old cardboard box, which I triple-tracked. That came out of hearing that the Flying Lizards used boxes on their 1979 hit "Money".
On "Looking for" I tried singing like Dusty Springfield in a smoky voice. I originally had double-tracked vocals, but chose the stronger solo vocal for the final mix.
