Just like "Drink", "Painting" came out of me fully formed with very few changes. (If only they were all that easy!!) But could I really have written something that good so quickly?
From writing so many songs, album sessions had been in fits and starts. Compounded by tragic circumstances (see "I'm Crying"), I began focussing in on recording the album proper.
Because of it's tempo changes, I laid down the acoustic guitar first to drive the rhythm, adding drums later. My girlfriend at the time lent me her acoustic for that distinctive low slung bass sound.
But to beef it up I needed Helen Smith, my right hand during the Blob Hotel years. Unfortunately (apart from WBUD) she was in no hurry to renew the alliance now! It seemed the tension that created great music between us also drove us crazy too!

But once I'd convinced her to return, she gamely bashed out the keyboard tracks (using a really cheap little keyboard my Dad had picked up in a boot sale !!!).
Helen would become integral to the albums success!
